Hi Guys,  this our 1st ‘Open Topic’ thread where i want all of your views and opinions on the subject we are discussing. Our 1st topic is a funny but serious one, as i have never heard of anything like this in soccer before. But now looking at it makes a lot of sense, so have a read and please discuss..

ARGENTINE CHIEFS WILL USE A SPECIAL SPRAY TO STOP ENCROACHING ON FREE KICKS

Officials announced yesterday that referees will mark a temporary white line using a special aerosol can, they will mark a line 9.15metres(10 yds) from the ball which defenders cannot cross. The spray will then disappear 30 seconds later.

How do you feel this will effect the game ? Do you think it will slow the game down even more?                Can you see it catching on in different countries?  What about in the MLS? I personally do not think it will work at the Giants & patriots stadium ,they have too many lines as it is!!!                                                         Let me know your thought’s please.

I think this idea could work, however, the Refs will have to be consistent in issuing cautions for crossing the line (as cliche as it sounds). As it is now, if a player comes in a half second early, play goes on regardless. Enforcement of this line would have to be in place regularly.

I like the idea! We need more tools like this to promote fair play on the field!!

Personally I think the refs in the MLS are terrible and make too many bad calls as is. That being said however, I still think it should be up to the ref to control where the line should be, and enforce it by cautions for those who violate. Having some nut run out from the line before the kick is wrong, and annoying, and maybe seeing enough yellow flashed at them will smarten them up.

I like the idea. I hate seeing the “discussions” that go on between the wall and the ref as they seem to go on and on sometimes.

  5. Brett Davis says:

Maybe the ref should join the wall… to ensure nobody creeps up!

But seriously, i think it would be worthwhile trying. Maybe during some of the pre-season games/tournaments to see how reliable it is.

I’m guessing it’s made to work on grass, would it work any differently on turf?

Hey Matt - I don’t think it’s going to be ready for the start of next season, but Red Bull Arena should be good to go by the end of it (assuming construction doesn’t get even further delayed).

As for spraying the lines - I don’t really see a downside - you remove all subjectivity from it, as a defender your either behind the line or your not. Hopefully the creeping forward stops and play can continues with less delay. Really it sounds win/win to me.

    I don’t know… disappearing 30 secs later… weird.
This means they expect the kick to be taken within 30 secs? Good luck with that.

Does thiis mean the ref has to carry this can around the whole game?

What if the ref runs out of spray?

I say let the ref run the game as they do now.
If a team encroaches and cheats… one warning followed by yellow cards.

Sounds interesting to say the least. Though if there is a line I can see a ton of complaints coming in, coaches complaining a guy jumped early etc. I say let the ref determine 10 yards, and if anyone encroaches.

By the way Danny giants stadium wont be used by the red bulls anymore (Thank God!) I believe their soccer specific stadium (red bull park) or something like that opens up next season. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

    Matt

  9. buddy says:

i’ve seen it a couple times on south american tv broadcasts. it’s not a bad idea as it allows less “creep” by the walls and it doesn’t take long to spray.
i just wanna know what the chemicals are in the can?
it can’t be safe. what if get tackled into spots where it was sprayed and you get some toxic chemical in your face?

  10. Andy says:

I have to admit that the concept appeals to me as there is nothing more annoying than seeing the wall creep forward everytime the ref turns his back. Well at least when it’s my team with the freekick!

It could also be viewed that this would speed up the process and take away some of the arguing and remeasuring of the steps…

Overall I think that it could be a useful tool for a good ref, but in the hands of a bad ref would be an opportunity to get more attention and ponce about. So clearly given some of the refs in the MLS (especially that Toledo) I don’t want to see it at TFC games!

Plius the colour might clash with Rickets’s boots…. 8-)

  11. kevin says:

They have been doing this in Brasil for years. They use the spray to circle the spot the ball is to be kicked from. I”ve also seen them using it for the 10 yard line. Quite progressive but not surprising as Brasil also has women Refs in their top flight!!!

I think this reduces confusion, argument and showboating, ultimately speeding up the free kick. It seems to work there and can work well in the MLS if done right and not at those stadiums with the annoying NFL lines!!!!
