LONELY AT TRAINING

The BMO is a weird place to be at the moment. Firstly to see this gigantic marshmallow like dome over the top of where we practice and play week in week out is very strange. The field seems like a different place than what we experience on the atmospheric match-day. It feels quite eerie on the pitch as you cannot see the stadium and do not get the feeling that you are actually in a stadium. Secondly  , its an absolute ‘Ghost Town’. No one is about the place, the locker rooms and halls are empty and even the office staff up-stairs look bored!!  Now i know all the players have gone back to their home towns and rightfully so,but this is where i am getting to. I am not the best of trainers at the best of times and you can ask the majority of players and Paul Winsper(fitness coach) who regularly get little chuckles out of my attempted sprints etc. So for me who’s getting  older and having to look after my fitness with even more scrutiny, i am finding it very hard to train alone! Paul who is probably one of the best fitness guys i have worked with has sent every player their off season fitness plan. And let me tell you, the boys who do not stick to this plan will get found out when we return to pre-season!   So as well as having to stick to a strict fitness regime i’ve got to do it alone. I hate training alone, i need someone with me who i can challenge or who can encourage me to carry on going. Thats why i have a lot of respect for those guys in individual sports who do lots of their training alone, i suppose its a battle with your mind foremost and then your body. So i am trying it alone at the moment hoping that an estranged player might appear from no-where and want to come in and help! Good job i’ve got my soccer schools going on in the evenings, where the kids keep me on my toes and the new adult camp i can actually join in and practice with.  Apart from that i may write an advert in to the local ‘Lonely hearts’ to see if there is anybody out there for me!!!

My son plays at BMO field right now on Saturdays…full field, and you are right it is a very different kettle of fish with the dome up…also the air pressure inside the dome hurts my ears :(
The dome is even creepier at night, add in the fact that the dome has improper lighting and it’s like having mood lighting during the match

Gotta have those tunes! I hate cardio and would never get through it with my iPod full of house, trance and the occasional rock tune, if I’m in a bad mood. I try to get the parts of my workout that I like the least, over first so they’re behind me and I can enjoy the remainder of the workout.
My husband would tell you that a nagging wife also helps, so you could always bring your wife along. I’m sure Paul Winsper could give her some pointers.

    Hey Danny
I just lost my job on Monday so I have lots of time on my hands.
I am an ex-Brit who knows how to play the game and I keep myself in pretty good shape.
I would be more than willing to help give you a push.
    Cheers
    Anto

We go to your Monday School in Vaughn and it certainly isn’t lonely there ;-)
Tyler and his mates really enjoy it and we thank you for taking time out of your busy and hectic schedule to do this for the boys. It\’s refreshing and positive seeing a pro athlete in T.O helping in youth development. It speaks to your character, sense of community and love of the game. Soccerfest in Thornhill was also a testament to this…

Well done Danny and thanks for making Toronto your home.!

Thanks Kevin , the soccer schools are a real blast for me and i love seeing the kids faces as i am putting them through their drills. All of the kids are very determined and willing to learn , which makes what i am trying to put across very worthwhile.

    Hey Danny

I hear ya loud and clear on this subject. I too workout alone, and it is hard at times. Music really helps so perhaps try that, though I would imagine you do already

You are kidding right? If you announce the time you are training I am sure that you would get lots of offers to train withn you.

How about the University and College soccer teams in the city? Maybe you can offer them a chance to train with you &/or the other TFC players? I’ll bet you get a few takers.
